Indias prolonged and devastating wave of Covid-19 infections gripped cities and overwhelmed urban health resources, reaching deep into rural India as well. Numbers have fallen significantly from their peak in May and reported deaths have dropped to below 3,000 per day as signs of stabilization emerge. The Modi government - under fire for allowing mass political and religious gatherings before the second wave - committed in early June to procuring more vaccines and speeding up their rollout.
